First up before we mention the 28 Best OLED display smartphones in this article let’s take a look at the fundamentals of the OLED technology.
What is an OLED display?
The term OLED is an acronym, which stands for organic light-emitting diode. A light emitting diode (LED) is basically for light source, and are used in most electronics. The OLED is different because of the organic part. The organic diode has a thin film of organic compound that emits light when an electric current is passed through it. Manufacturers places a layer of organic semi-conductor between two electrodes; at least one of these electrodes is transparent. OLEDs create digital display in devices like television screens, computer monitors, mobile phones, handheld game consoles, smart watches and PDAs.
An OLED display would work without a backlight because it emits visible light. Thus, it can display deep black levels and can be thinner and lighter than a liquid crystal display (LCD). In low light conditions (such as a dark room), an OLED screen can achieve a higher contrast ratio than an LCD.
There are two main families of OLED: Those based on small molecules and those employing polymers. An OLED display can be driven with a passive-matrix (PMOLED) or active-matrix (AMOLED) control scheme. In the PMOLED scheme, each row in the display is controlled sequentially, whereas AMOLED control uses a thin-film transistor backplane to directly access and switch each individual pixel on or off, which allows higher resolution and larger display sizes.
AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, is a display technology used in smartwatches, mobile devices, televisions and laptops. OLED describes a specific type of thin-film-display technology in which the organic compounds form the electroluminescent material, and the active matrix refers to the technology behind the pixels. An AMOLED display mainly consists of an active matrix of OLED pixels which generates light (luminescence) upon an electrical activation that have been integrated onto a thin-film transistor (TFT) array, which functions as a series of switches to control the current flowing to each individual pixel .
The disadvantage of the AMOLED is that the red and green OLED films have longer lifespans compared to the blue OLED films. This variation results in color shifts as a particular pixel fades faster than the other pixels. Also AMOLED displays are prone to screen burn-in.
PMOLED (passive-matrix organic light-emitting diode) structures are arranged in a format that has rows and columns. There are columns of organic cathodes which are superimposed on rows of an anode material. The row and column lines can be turned on to activate the individual pixels at the intersection points with this type of format.
The organic material is set down between an anode and a cathode – with both the organic material and a cathode metal regions being deposited using a relatively standard process. These processes enables large scale manufacturing to be achieved in a relatively cheap manner.
In terms of their structure, the layers of organic material are set down in a form of ribbed structure with columns and rows obviously running in different directions. Although the PMOLED are relatively easy to design and fabricate, they require complicated drive arrangements because each line needs to have current limited for each of the diode.
The major disadvantage of the PMOLED is that they relatively consume more power when compared with the AMOLED. As a result of this the PMOLEDs are normally suited to display applications where the display size is less than 50 mm to 80 mm across the diagonal.
What makes the OLED screen so unique?
1. An improved battery life:
This brings in the fact that you don’t need to power a backlight. The backlights are very hungry for power hence consume more of it. An OLED can light up individual pixels when necessary, and to different degrees. That’s why battery life can be significantly improved on smartphones that use OLED screens.
2. Thinner phones are made:
The fact that you are removing a backlight also means the entire display module in your smartphone can be thinner. That, in turn, means your phone can be thinner.
3. A better contrast is achieved:
LCD screen are not able to show true black that is because the backlight is on at all times. On the other hand an OLEDs screens advantage is very clear. If an OLED screen needs to display black in an area, your phone can simply turn specific pixels off. This means you’ll have zero light being emitted, which is about as black as it gets.
